Nevada Wine Overview
Nevada is one of a handful of states in the U.S. whose wine industry remains in its infancy. Nevada’s climate can be challenging for growing grapes, which is mildly surprising due to its proximity to prolific wine producing states like California, Arizona, and New Mexico. This goes to show the importance of micro climates and their effect on agriculture in general and grape growing in particular.
Further, the state itself is vast, with wide tracts of open land and settlements in and around a few metro areas. As of 2012, Nevada has three wineries scattered across the state, each tucked in a valley.
Pahrump Valley Winery is just an hour from Las Vegas and is the best known and most popular in the state. Their wines can be found throughout southern Nevada.
Tahoe Ridge Winery is located in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. While the winery has its own vineyard adjacent to their winery and tasting room, they use mostly California grapes. This is fairly convenient because the winery is just a few short miles from the Nevada and California border.
Finally, there’s Churchill Vineyards which is located about seven miles outside the town of Fallon in the Lahontan Valley.
Nevada wines aren’t widely distributed but you can find them at large retail liquor outlets and some large grocery chains in the major cities of the state, such as Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Reno.
